[Up First] Escalating Attacks Between US & Iran, Inflation Hits Three-Year High, World Cup Opens

For the second consecutive night, the United States launched airstrikes against Iran, targeting military facilities along the coast and around the Strait of Hormuz — the sites from which Iran has been firing missiles and drones at shipping in the Gulf. U.S. Central Command reported the operation lasted nearly four hours and involved 49 Tomahawk missiles as well as jet fighters. President Trump justified the strikes by saying Iran was taking too long to come to the table

and threatened additional strikes if a deal was not reached.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps fired back

at U.S. military bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan, claiming to have targeted 18 sites. No casualties or significant damage were reported. The two consecutive nights of exchanges mark a sharp turn from earlier in the week, when Trump had spoken of being close to a diplomatic deal with Iran. Analysts note the situation is clearly escalating

rapidly up what one correspondent described as “the escalation ladder.”

Trump also disclosed that the U.S. had been covertly assisting oil tankers in navigating past Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz since last month, claiming more than 200 ships had passed through. Ship-monitoring groups and media outlets had already been tracking the movement, making the operation less secret than Trump suggested. Separately, the U.S. Navy disabled

a tanker near the strait for the second day running, as part of efforts to enforce a blockade on Iranian oil exports. Even so, the overall volume of traffic through the strait remains far below prewar levels.

Consumer prices in May rose just over 4% compared to a year earlier, the highest inflation rate in more than three years. Energy costs were the primary driver, with gasoline prices surging roughly $1.15 per gallon since the U.S.–Iran war began, pushing the national average to about $4.13. When asked whether the numbers worried him, President Trump said, “I love the inflation” — a remark he later clarified by saying he was relieved inflation had not climbed even higher, and that prices would fall once the war ended.

The rising cost of living is taking a toll on

working families. One Kentucky mother described being forced to cancel her son’s summer camp because of gasoline costs and distances involved, calling it deeply painful as a parent. Daycare prices have also climbed about 3.5% nationwide, adding further pressure to household budgets.

Average wages have grown 3.4% over the past year — not enough to keep pace with

inflation. Many two-income households report spending more than they bring in each month, reversing a trend from recent years when wages had been outpacing prices. Economists note this turnaround

is particularly concerning because it signals a broad squeeze on household purchasing power.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially kicked off in Mexico City, marking the start of the world’s largest sporting event, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament opens against a backdrop of significant geopolitical

tension, with protests both celebrating and challenging the event taking place across host cities.

One major source of controversy surrounds entry into the United States. Disputes have arisen over which national teams and fans are able to obtain visas or otherwise gain access to cross into the U.S., creating uncertainty for supporters of certain nations. Immigration policy and the broader political climate in the U.S. have cast a shadow over

what organizers had hoped would be a unifying global celebration.

Despite the tensions, excitement is palpable in Mexico City, where celebrations and street gatherings have accompanied the opening. The tournament, which will feature games across all three host nations, is expected to draw record global viewership and generate enormous economic activity — provided the broader geopolitical climate does not further disrupt participation or travel.
