Frank was also known for his candor and willingness to take on the financial industry. He believed that deregulation in the 1990s and early 2000s had laid the groundwork for the crisis. Critics, however, argued that some provisions of Dodd-Frank were overly burdensome for smaller lenders and that the law stifled economic growth. The debate over its provisions continued long after its passage, and parts of the law were later rolled back under the Trump administration.
His candor about the bank’s problems earned him both praise and criticism.

Some economists argued that over-regulation could hamper economic growth.
