[Up First] Immigration Bill Passes, Trump’s Grip On Republicans, John Bolton To Plead Guilty

After roughly 18 hours of continuous voting, the Senate passed a bill to fund immigration enforcement agencies — including ICE and Border Patrol — for three years. The vote was nearly party-line,

with only one Republican opposing the measure. The bill uses a Senate budget tool called reconciliation

to bypass the normal 60-vote threshold, funding the agencies through the remainder of Trump’s presidency.

The overnight session also featured a so-called vote-a-rama,

in which both parties offered amendments to put each other on record. Democrats pushed multiple amendments targeting Trump’s controversial $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” settlement fund — a proposed fund to compensate Trump supporters who claim government persecution. Every amendment aimed at blocking the fund failed, though a small number of Republicans did cross the aisle on several votes, including senators facing competitive re-election races in Ohio and Alaska.

Despite widespread Republican discomfort with the anti-weaponization fund, most senators ultimately deferred to the White House. Analysts noted that tension between congressional Republicans and the administration appears to be growing, yet the pattern of lawmakers ultimately falling in line

continues to hold.

For a decade, President Trump has been the dominant force

in the Republican Party, largely through the threat of retribution against dissenters. But this week, small cracks became visible. Four House Republicans joined Democrats to rebuke Trump over military action in Iran, a rare instance of enough GOP members crossing over to actually pass a measure. In the Senate, multiple members voiced concern over Trump’s nomination of Bill Pulte — a housing agency official with no intelligence experience — as acting director of national intelligence.

Critics also raised alarms over the proposed nomination of Todd Blanche, Trump’s former personal attorney and champion of the anti-weaponization fund, as attorney general. Opponents dismissed the fund as a slush fund

for Trump loyalists, including some convicted of crimes related to January 6. The accumulation of these controversies is prompting observers to ask whether Trump’s hold on the party is beginning to slip.

Analysts point to the political calendar as a key factor. With midterm elections approaching, Republicans in competitive states are increasingly calculating whether loyalty to the president serves their electoral interests. Still, the consensus is that any defections

remain limited and unlikely to fundamentally challenge Trump’s authority within the party.

John Bolton, former national security adviser and one of Trump’s most vocal critics, has agreed to plead guilty

to a single count of mishandling

classified information. Prosecutors and intelligence officials stress that the case has genuine legal merit and is distinct from what critics describe as politically motivated prosecutions of other Trump opponents.

Bolton’s case centers on material from his memoir that allegedly contained classified details. Unlike several other cases brought against perceived enemies of the administration, intelligence officials involved in this investigation have affirmed the seriousness of the underlying conduct. The distinction matters in a political environment where many prosecutorial decisions have been accused of serving as instruments of retribution

rather than justice.

The guilty plea is expected to resolve the case without a trial. Bolton has been a persistent and public critic of Trump since leaving the administration, making the outcome politically charged even as legal observers maintain that the underlying charge stands on its own merits.
