[Up First] Florida Primary Results, US-Canada Tariffs, Meta Trial Begins

Alaska, Florida, and Wyoming all held primaries on Tuesday. In Alaska, incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan and former Democratic Congresswoman Mary Peltola each claimed roughly 45% of the vote, with results still being tallied. In Florida, the contest between the party’s progressive and moderate wings produced a mixed picture.

State Representative Angie Nixon won the Democratic U.S. Senate primary, defeating former impeachment witness Alexander Vindman despite being drastically outraised — Vindman spent over $16 million compared to Nixon’s barely $1 million. Nixon’s decades of grassroots activism in Florida proved a decisive asset. However, she faces long odds in the general election against incumbent Republican Senator Ashley Moody in what has become a reliably conservative state.

On the House side, progressive candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America lost key races. Meanwhile, Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, redistricted out of her seat by Republicans, won a safer district but in doing so defeated a field of Black candidates — a result Democrats called complicated, especially following the Supreme Court’s significant rollback of the Voting Rights Act this summer. In the governor’s race, Republican Byron Donalds and Democrat David Jolly secured their respective nominations.

With less than two hours before a midnight deadline, President Trump announced a three-day postponement of an additional 50% tariff on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports — a hodgepodge of goods ranging from wine and hockey sticks to cement. The announcement came after the two countries signaled a potential agreement to restart the long-stalled Keystone Pipeline project.

The Keystone Pipeline was originally a joint U.S.-Canadian project designed to transport oil southward, but it became mired in environmental controversy and had its permit revoked by President Biden. Trump reversed that decision last year as part of his broader push to expand fossil fuel production. Canada’s prime minister acknowledged the tariff postponement but only until Friday, leaving the fate of a comprehensive North American trade agreement still very much up in the air.

The broader context is a series of escalating retaliatory duties between the two neighbors that began last year, straining one of the world’s most integrated trade relationships. While the pipeline announcement provided enough common ground for a brief pause, analysts noted the three-day window leaves little time to resolve the deeper structural disagreements underlying the dispute.

A major trial against Meta opened in California on Tuesday, with a coalition of state attorneys general leveling accusations that the company deliberately engineered its platforms — Instagram and Facebook — to be psychologically addictive for young users. Prosecutors drew a pointed comparison to the tobacco industry, arguing that Meta maximized profits while knowingly harming public health.

The states contend that Meta misrepresented the risks its platforms posed to minors, suppressing internal research that showed harmful effects on mental health. The lawsuit argues that features such as infinite scroll, algorithmic recommendation, and notification systems were not incidental design choices but calculated tools to maximize engagement — particularly among teenagers who are more susceptible to compulsive behavior.

Meta has denied the claims, arguing that the states are mischaracterizing how the platforms work and that the company has invested heavily in safety tools for younger users. The trial is expected to last several weeks and could set a major legal precedent for how tech companies are regulated in relation to minors.
