[Up First] Trump Touts Progress In Iran Talks, UFC White House Freedom 250, DNI Nomination

The week brought a rapid and disorienting sequence of military and diplomatic moves. After Israel bombed Beirut, Iran fired missiles at Israel in defense of Hezbollah. The U.S. then struck Iranian military sites twice, including water reservoirs. Iran downed a U.S. helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz, attacked American bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan, and the U.S. disabled three ships heading to Iranian ports as part of a naval blockade.

Three Indian sailors were killed in one of the incidents, adding an international dimension to the conflict.

On Thursday morning, Trump signaled new strikes were being planned; by the afternoon he declared a peace deal was essentially done, claiming all parties had approved it and a signing in Europe could happen within days. Iran’s foreign ministry flatly pushed back,

saying no deal had been finalized and that Trump had added new demands at the last moment two weeks prior. Qatar has been playing a growing mediation role, and a call between Trump and Qatar’s emir — during which Iranian messages were exchanged — may have been why further strikes were called off.

Any near-term agreement would focus narrowly on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and extending the ceasefire,

leaving nuclear negotiations for a later stage. Iran’s conditions include an end to Israel’s war in Lebanon, assurances against future bombing, and the unfreezing of billions in Iranian assets — demands Israel has so far refused to accommodate. With U.S. inflation topping 4% and gas prices rising, Trump has strong domestic incentives to end the conflict quickly.

On Sunday, seven UFC bouts will be held on the White House lawn as part of “Freedom 250,” a celebration of America’s 250th birthday that also coincides with Flag Day and Trump’s 80th birthday. The event, available on Paramount+, is one of several major projects dominating Trump’s attention. He has spoken at length

about demolishing the East Wing of the White House to build a ballroom, constructing a massive arch near Arlington National Cemetery, a pedestrian bridge near the Lincoln Memorial, and the recently completed renovation of the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool.

Analysts note that Trump has devoted considerable energy to these side projects

even as major policy commitments have gone quiet. His pledge to end the war in Ukraine and a promised healthcare overhaul have both faded from the public agenda. A Princeton political historian described the combination of extracurricular pursuits as highly unusual for a sitting president.

A government watchdog group has filed a lawsuit over Trump’s financial stake in TKO Group, the parent company of the UFC, raising conflict-of-interest concerns about a president hosting and promoting an event run by a company in which he holds a personal interest. The White House has defended the event as a patriotic celebration, but critics argue the optics

are deeply problematic at a time when Trump’s approval ratings are at an all-time low.

Trump nominated federal prosecutor Jay Clayton as the next Director of National Intelligence. The nomination comes after the backlash

over his previous temporary pick was so intense that Congress allowed a critical surveillance authority to lapse rather than renew it under those circumstances.

The expired tool is a significant component of U.S. intelligence-gathering infrastructure. Its lapse

represents a rare instance of Congress expressing its disapproval of an executive appointment by withdrawing cooperation on unrelated but vital national security legislation. Clayton’s nomination is now seen as an attempt to reset the relationship between the White House and the intelligence community.
